As MacKay enters a new chapter, we remain grounded in the people, relationships, and values that built our company. One of those people is Richard “Dick” Sposito, a co-founder and influential leader whose technical expertise, thoughtful leadership, and commitment to employees helped shape the company we are today.
In 2025, MacKay embraced a bold new vision for growth, positioning the firm for an exciting future and an expanded presence in the national marketplace. In 2026, we introduced our new brand identity as part of that evolution. As we look ahead, we remain proud of the people whose leadership and contributions helped build the foundation for MacKay’s future. To recognize that impact, we are proud to introduce the Richard Sposito Internship Program, honoring our co-founder and the lasting contributions he made to the firm.
A Foundation Built on Technical Excellence and Relationships
Dick Sposito grew up in Arizona and earned his engineering degree from San Jose State University. He later became both a licensed engineer and land surveyor, establishing the technical foundation for a career defined by analytical thinking, curiosity, and a commitment to quality.
In 1974, Dick moved to the Pacific Northwest, where he partnered with Don MacKay to purchase the Vancouver, WA, branch of MacKay & Somps and establish MacKay & Sposito. Built on a foundation of civil engineering, land surveying and planning, the firm began developing the expertise and relationships that would shape its future. Dick quickly became an integral part of the company’s growth and success.

Known for his dedication and hands-on approach, Dick preferred working alongside his colleagues rather than above them. He valued accountability, resourcefulness, and hard work, while making himself approachable to employees at every level.
His leadership extended beyond engineering and business operations. Dick believed in treating people fairly, recognizing hard work, and building lasting relationships with employees and clients. During challenging economic periods, including the 1982 recession, he demonstrated a genuine concern for employees and their families, sometimes stepping in personally to help those who needed it.
A Lasting Influence on How We Work
Dick helped shape not only the technical capabilities of the company but also its culture. He believed in thoughtful, measured growth and delivering quality work rather than pursuing volume for its own sake.
He was particularly drawn to projects that required long-term commitment and careful attention to detail, including roadways, subdivisions, site plans, and commercial developments. He also recognized opportunities to move the company forward, helping lead its transition to computer-aided design (CAD) and the adoption of AutoCAD.
His combination of technical excellence, sound judgment, humility, and genuine care for others helped establish a foundation that continues to influence MacKay today.
Investing in the Next Generation
The Richard Sposito Internship Program reflects the importance he placed on technical knowledge, mentorship, hard work, and relationships. It also represents our commitment to investing in the next generation of professionals who will help shape the future of our industry.
As we continue to grow as one MacKay, we are proud to recognize the people who helped build the company and the values that continue to guide us.
The Richard Sposito Internship Program is more than a name. It is a way to carry forward a legacy of learning, opportunity, technical excellence, and investing in people.
