Intern SpotlightKenny Mattos

MacKay Intern, Vancouver

“My favorite part of working with MacKay has been the variety of jobs and crew mates. There was a great mix of construction staking, topo, and monument search that grew my understanding of the profession as a whole. I would tell future interns that while this job isn’t easy, it can be a fun and rewarding challenge and can allow for great professional relationships and growth in technical experience. I gained many tangible skills throughout my internship that will benefit me in my future career.”

If another student or graduate was considering an internship at MacKay, I would recommend them to go through with it, as it provides great experiences professionally and personally. My favorite part has been the office atmosphere and learning about the variety of projects that we work on. It has also been fun to connect with the community. I’ve enjoyed working on everything. Having both office and field tasks keeps me engaged on every project, and you never know what the day will bring.”

MacKay Intern, Fort Collins

If given the opportunity, I would highly recommend interning and working for MacKay to other students. My internship has helped me grow professionally by teaching me applicable professional skills that will benefit me not only in my future work but also through school as well. One project that I have enjoyed working on this summer was running and writing a report on a dam flood model in HEC-RAS. I was able to be with the project through most of the process and developed skills in HEC-RAS modeling, GIS, Excel, and technical writing.”

“Our interns are curious, asking questions about things we sometimes take for granted and forcing us to really think about why we do things the way we do, allowing us to grow as much as they do. I’ve always felt that MacKay cares about our emerging professionals and is willing to make the long-term investment to help them grow. We provide opportunities to attend conferences and training courses to promote networking opportunities and continuing education, and we have a culture of internal training where employees support each other.”

Intern SpotlightFernando Rojas

MacKay Intern, Chicago

I would tell anyone considering an internship at MacKay that their experience here would be immensely valuable in helping them grow and understand their career. My internship has taught me how to be more organized, by being exposed to the amount of detail and planning that goes into each project at every stage. I expected to learn a lot, but I didn’t anticipate the degree to which I’d be able to develop my CAD skills at MacKay. This internship has taught me a significant amount that I wouldn’t have likely been exposed to through schoolwork alone.”

MacKay Intern, Vancouver

My favorite part of the MacKay internship has been working with and getting to know all the different people within the survey crew. I would tell another student that it is a great experience to learn and widen your skillset. My internship has helped me grow professionally by exposing me to the typical work environment of a surveyor and the challenges that can arise in the field. I have learned to love the challenges and unexpected places I get to explore that comes with the job as a land surveyor.”
