Project Description
The 12th Street Levee and Operational Dikes project supported a major habitat restoration effort on Smith Island adjacent to the City’s wastewater treatment plant. The project was designed to reconnect tidal waters with existing and restored wetland areas, helping reestablish historic tidal habitat for fish and wildlife.
Our geotechnical team evaluated subsurface conditions to support the widening of an existing levee along the wastewater treatment ponds and constructing a new standalone levee. Geotechnical borings extending to depths of up to 71 feet identified thick deposits of soft, compressible soils that presented significant settlement and seepage considerations.
The team performed laboratory testing and developed recommendations for settlement mitigation, seepage control, and levee construction. Services also included preparation of geotechnical construction plans and bidding documents, providing the City with the technical foundation needed to safely construct the levee improvements while supporting the project’s broader environmental restoration goals.
