Project Description

The Black Cloud Mine reclamation project involved the environmental remediation and restoration of a legacy lead-zinc mining site. Conducted under a Comprehensive Environmental Response, Compensation, and Liability Act (CERCLA) Consent Decree, the ongoing work addressed the long-term management of mine waste, tailings, water, and other site impacts while restoring the property for future environmental stability.

The project included reclamation of a 20-acre milling and processing site, a 40-acre tailings impoundment, and multiple associated satellite mine sites. Our services included environmental assessment, remedial and reclamation design, building demolition, removal and disposal of chemicals and waste, waste rock management, regrading, placement of growth media, revegetation, and construction of drainage and diversion improvements.

Significant materials management efforts included the collection and placement of approximately 220,000 cubic yards of waste rock within the tailings storage facility, along with 325,000 cubic yards of grading fill and cover materials to support the construction of a stable, vegetated cover. Water management services included hydrologic, hydraulic, and geotechnical engineering for natural waterway bypass channels, diversion ditches, seepage collection and treatment systems, and dam safety improvements. The project also included the design and construction of a new water treatment plant to manage tailings seepage.
