Project Description
A comprehensive environmental investigation and remediation program was completed for a former 343-acre aerospace facility to evaluate potential impacts to soil, soil vapor, and groundwater. The multi-phase effort focused on identifying former contaminant source areas, evaluating potential risks to property users and the surrounding environment, and determining where additional investigation or remediation was needed to support long-term site management.
The soil investigation involved the collection and analysis of thousands of samples for a broad range of potential contaminants, including volatile and semi-volatile organic compounds, petroleum hydrocarbons, metals, arsenic, pesticides, herbicides, Polychlorinated Biphenyls (PCBs), and Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs). The results identified areas of concern and provided critical information to guide subsequent investigation and remediation activities.
The project also included an extensive soil vapor assessment to evaluate the potential for vapor intrusion into indoor spaces. Hundreds of soil vapor probes were installed and monitored, with collected samples analyzed for volatile organic compounds. This work helped assess potential exposure pathways and inform recommendations for protecting current and future property users.
Groundwater investigations were completed across multiple phases to define the lateral and vertical extent of contamination associated with 13 separate groundwater plumes, including impacts from volatile organic compounds, petroleum hydrocarbons, and hexavalent chromium. Hundreds of groundwater monitoring wells were designed, permitted, constructed, and monitored to support the ongoing assessment.
Data collected throughout each phase informed subsequent investigations and helped guided the development of effective remediation strategies. The findings were ultimately used to support the design, construction, and operation of multiple groundwater remediation systems, providing a comprehensive approach to managing complex environmental conditions across the former aerospace facility.
