MacKay Expands Northwest Presence with Acquisitions of Nelson Geotechnical Associates and Curran-McLeod, Inc.

May 27, 2026 in News

At MacKay, growth has always been about more than expanding our footprint. It’s about building strong relationships, bringing together talented teams, and creating new opportunities to better serve our clients and communities.

Following our recent rebrand from MacKay Sposito to MacKay, we are excited to announce the acquisitions of Nelson Geotechnical Associates and Curran-McLeod, Inc., two highly respected firms that officially joined MacKay in April 2026.

These strategic additions strengthen our technical capabilities across the Northwest while supporting our continued growth as a multidisciplinary engineering and consulting firm with an expanding nationwide reach.

Strengthening Expertise Across the Northwest

Based in Woodinville, WA, with an additional office in Wenatchee, Nelson Geotechnical Associates brings more than two decades of expertise in geotechnical engineering and a strong reputation for technical excellence and responsive client service throughout the region.

Curran-McLeod, Inc., located in the Portland metropolitan area, has served municipalities and special purpose districts for more than 35 years, specializing in water, wastewater, stormwater, and transportation infrastructure projects.

Together, these additions enhance MacKay’s ability to deliver integrated solutions across a broader range of infrastructure, environmental, and engineering services while deepening our presence throughout the Northwest.

Built on Shared Values and Relationships

“These partnerships represent more than growth. They reflect alignment in values, culture, and commitment to the communities we serve,” said Derrick Smith, CEO of MacKay.

“As MacKay continues to grow across the Northwest and expand our broader platform nationally, we are focused on bringing together strong teams that share our approach to client service, technical excellence, and long-term community impact. Both Nelson Geotechnical Associates and Curran-McLeod, Inc. bring deep expertise, trusted relationships, and talented people who strengthen our ability to serve clients throughout the region while contributing to our long-term vision for growth.”

For both Nelson Geotechnical Associates and Curran-McLeod, Inc., the decision to join MacKay was rooted in shared culture, collaboration, and opportunity.

“We built Nelson Geotechnical Associates around strong relationships, technical quality, and responsiveness to our clients,” said Khaled Shawish, CEO of Nelson Geotechnical Associates.

“Joining MacKay allows us to continue that legacy while gaining access to broader multidisciplinary resources and expanded opportunities for our team and the clients we serve.”

“Curran-McLeod, Inc. has always been focused on practical solutions, trusted partnerships, and supporting public infrastructure projects that improve communities,” said Ed Hodges, President of Curran-McLeod, Inc. “By joining MacKay, we gain additional depth, resources, and collaborative opportunities while continuing to provide the same level of service our clients know and expect.”

Looking Ahead

Both firms will continue operating with continuity in leadership, client relationships, and day-to-day services as integration efforts progress thoughtfully over time.

Curran-McLeod, Inc. has transitioned to MacKay’s Lake Oswego branch office, strengthening our ability to support municipal and infrastructure clients throughout the Northwest region.

Nelson Geotechnical Associates will continue operating under its existing brand during a phased transition process, with a formal transition to the MacKay brand planned for September.

These acquisitions mark another exciting step forward following our transition from MacKay Sposito to MacKay and reflect our continued evolution as a growing multidisciplinary platform serving clients across the Northwest and beyond.

We are excited to welcome the Nelson Geotechnical Associates and Curran-McLeod teams to MacKay, and look forward to what we will accomplish together.
